Delicious soba. In an old house, so it was fun to eat inside. The special of 5 noodles seemed like too much, so we went with a cold and a warm soba. I liked the cold a bit better

A must visit when you are in Kyoto! Over 500 years old this Soba recipe was passed down for generation. True to it's appearance it's pure and simple, with certain sides, sauce or toppings this simple Soba can be elevated to a different level. If you can't read Japanese they have an English menu upon request, Yes they have pictures too. #sobainkyoto @asianfoodninja #asianfoodninja

Definitely one of the best soba we have ever had. We needed to queue 15 minutes to get in and the queue seems to consist mainly of Japanese which is a good sign.

Wonderfully chewy cold soba with a sauce that when added with aromatics and slurping help add necessary air to complete the flavor and mouthfeel to understand why soba is enjoyed here so much. Ordering the hot foods gives you a warning stomach if you visit here in the winter months. Advise large size for western appetites.

This looks like a really old soba restaurant. The waiting area outside has a Japanese garden as well as bamboo fences. The steps going to the 2nd floor are small. People about 5'10 and over will have a hard time putting their whole foot on a step. I had to tiptoe on the way up and down. There is an English menu. The menu is small. The food is good as despite being affordable.

A unique soba tasting experience. Noodles are not choppy like the store noodles. Always busy, since this place was visited by former emperor of Japan. They take reservations so I highly recommend to do so in advance.

Many articles claim this store to be over 500 years old as the oldest soba store in Kyoto, though starting out as a confectionary store, it wasn't really until mid-edo era, early 1700s, that they started doing soba. The fat udon noodles in the nabedon are pretty good. The soba is good - not the best I've ever had, the machine-made touch is evident, but it's the standard by which other soba places should hope to compare against - it is good. The atmosphere with quiet servers shuffling around softly, the beautiful old wooden surrounds in a home built and extended in genuine Kyoto matchiya style architecture - it is the sense of place that makes this a nice place to have soba.

Best soba I've ever had (better than other so called "best soba"). The 5 tower original set is priced reasonably for the quality and amount of food. Go at odd times to avoid queues. The mushrooms are unbelievable, eat the tempura prawns whilst hot. Also follow the instructions for eating the soba (or pour the broth into the plate of noodles instead of dip into the broth).
