Very friendly staff, most are multi lingual. Dinner was great for me but tough on my wife who isn't a huge fan of fish

Their service was uncomparable! Impressive ryokan experience. The building, however, has been around for quite some time. It does gets cold in the hallways.

Beautiful historic building. Each tatami matted rooms is unique. Attentive staff. Several clean, well appointed onsens, group and private. Yukata provided. Kaiseki dinner and breakfast meals with great attention to detail brought to the tatami matted rooms in traditional style. Summer fireflies in well-kept hillside garden. Expect staff with little English. CASH ONLY.

Beautiful antique onsen! Very quiet and peaceful environment. Staff are supper. Dinner was huge with excellent quality of fish. The room was traditional with tatami, spacious for 2-4 people, no shower or bath inside, only toilet. From my room, I can see a garden with sakura trees, but I was there in late winter—it’s not sakura season. There are both private and public onsen which is 24h open!

My wife and I had the greatest stay here. The location is beautiful, the building is beautiful, the rooms and onsens were clean and comforting, the food was delicious and carefully prepared, but above all was the exceptional service we received from the staff. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and genuinely cared for. Each individual was so kind and warm and happy. We walked out of Mukaitaki in agreement that this was the greatest stay of our lives. If we are ever back to Aizu-Wakamatsu, we will most certainly do everything we can to stay here again. I cannot recommend it any more highly! Also, we would like to share a particular thank you for the outstanding hospitality and kindness from Sherwin and Sanpei. Wonderful people!

Staying here was absolutely one of the most memorable experiences in my life. Went in February and didn't realize when I booked that they would have a magical fairytale candlelit scene in the snow-covered garden from dusk. The service was also incredible -- one person who stayed the night and took care of you both night and morning. On top of that it's a historic landmark and the hot spring was once for the private use of the local rulers. There is no outdoor bath, but the water quality is amazing. The only caveat is that if you're picky about food, you should arrange ahead. One of the signature dishes at the dinner served in-room is a kind of marinated carp that even I found unusual.

My husband and I stayed here for one night. It is a gorgeous traditional inn, all wood with shiny floors and well-kept tatami mats in the rooms. The landscaping outside with the mountains as a backdrop is breathtaking. Even better than the beauty of the inn is the people who work there. Very kind and warm - they will do anything they can to make you feel welcome and special. I requested a special diet - I only eat vegetables and fish (no meat) and they were extremely accommodating. I felt very well taken care of. The food is local to the region, and very delicious. It’s a little bit daunting to a Westerner at first, but if you embrace it you will have no regrets. The baths were amazing in a minimal type of way. They are not made to be modern, but you can feel the history and the water leaves your skin very smooth. 10/10 experience. We will definitely return if we are ever in the area.

One of my best hotel experiences; the courtyard had a small, but exemplarily exquisite garden, the best I have seen at this size through out East Asia. Full course dinner filled with seasonal delight; I can still remember the scent of pork shabu and the zest of local braised carp. In spring and autumn it’s even worth staying here just for the garden and the food. Onsen baths are beautifully decorated with tiles and scrupulously maintained, with a variety of options. At night one sleeps with the tranquility and rhythmic flow of the river beneath your windows. The Ryokan is decorated with art works by Japanese politicians and scholars of 19th and 20th century and it was fun to read their names and to take a brief study at the meanings of the decorations. A true delight, after all, which was even made better by its attentive, welcoming staff — it’s transparent to visitiere that they love this property from the depth of their heart.
