We stayed here after a 3 weeks trip through Japan and it was the worst place we have stayed at. It was not worth the money we have paid for it. We have expected a ryokan, but it was more a hostel. The staff was not very welcoming and helpful. We have spent 2 nights here. The food is uncreative and prepared without much love. Attention: The inn is 15 minutes outside of Tsumago in Ootsumago.

If you can avoid it, don't stay here. The whole place is dirty, the rooms are small and cramped and the staff are rude. After having staying other places in Japan, this was a huge let down in what we had come to expect from Japanese hospitality. The set 'keiseki' dinner was a saving grace, as it was huge and delicious. Otherwise this would have been a one star review. I would say it was worth it to see the area, but the Magome side of the trail is much nicer.

Very basic inn, which is not a problem if you expect it. Food very good. Cleanliness a real issue, our sheets were dirty (but were changed quickly with much apology when asked) and they were still on the futons when packed away the next morning for the next guests. I think our sheets hadn't been changed. Toilets were dirty with a stale urine smell. A simple home-stay style inn which would be much better if it was kept a little cleaner. We don't mind basic, we do mind dirty.

My wife and I adored this place. It's a beautiful old building with friendly, helpful staff. Best part is the food. They serve traditional Japanese fare and special regional food. My wife is vegan and they easily prepared a vegan dinner and breakfast for her. Definitely stay here if you can.

Nice and quiet location, even the ryokan is set right by the main road. A clean and tidy, the room was spacious and I found a unique facility for a Japanese guest house with a private shower room, which make it little easier for those who unfamiliar with a typical Japanese onsen hot tub - shared showers. The food was great with good quality ingredients. The rate might be higher compares to near by ryokan in the area but the overall facilities the room and food are well worth it. I think that the menu for breakfast and dinner may change daily, depends on what’s local ingredients could be found. But I only stayed for one night, I wish I’d have more time to spend in the neighbourhood and do some trekking. I quite enjoyed the jazz music playing on a tv in the living room area behind the lobby. The ryokan is about 15 - 20 minutes walk to Tsumago-Juku, which considering not too far when there’s scenery of mountains to be seen. Catching the bus is possible also, there is a bus stop right behind the place or walk further up the road that take just 7 minutes across the bridge, the owner suggested there would be more frequent bus running time.

A bit overpriced. It felt like they were not super happy hosting us. The manager entered twice in our room during our stay. Another weird detail happened when he intentionally opened the door directly after knocking, we were inside the room, luckily we were dressed. We were the only guests there meanwhile the rest of places were completely full. On the other hand the food is quite nice, cooked by a japanise grandma. We took dinner and breakfast.

Important Information: This ryokan is 15 minutes walk from Tsumago. Make sure your luggage is sent here and you will need to take a 2000 yen taxi to the train station if you don't want to walk. Where we stayed was the new wing of a very old building (I think). There was a lot good about the place. The room was nice and the food was really good. There were toilets upstairs and downstairs and there were segregated baths (the female bath was super hot!). The big downside was the owner who was NOT welcoming, despite the fact I have good Japanese and we are always polite. Interestingly, it appeared that Japanese guests ate separately to us. Maybe he had some bad experiences with foreigners ...

Great blend of modern facilities and traditional guest house offerings. Definitely a comfortable place to spend a night or two. Meals were generous and delicious. Location is about 15 minutes’ walk outside of Tsumago — would be real spooky at night! Couldn’t accommodate vegan cuisine, unfortunately.
