Ogawaya Onsen Hotel - Gero

There is a private onsen at this hotel. Indoors but with big glass windows that can be opened. Very comfortable and pleasant

Good experience with my first onsen. The dinner was ok and the room was also warm and cozy. Every staff is friendly. I recommend here if you look for a reasonable private onsen!

Exellent onsen Hotel. Has some new rooms and they are very good. Gero onsen is not as popular as it used to be, but it's still a good place to enjoy onsen and this hotel has many onsen options, outside, inside. In your room, with views, many option. This is a good onsen hotel in Gero, at reasonable price. There are not many onsen options now in Gero, so this place is deffinely worth staying at. Good staff, good quality facilities. I recommend this place

A very nice hot spring hotel in Gero. It's being renovated with new amenities and more modernized outlook. If you wish to stay, I recommend you to take a closer look at their dinning manu as they offer a wide range for the meal package. Wagu is nice and you need to pay extra for Wagu dinning manu.

I have been to Japan several times every year. No doubt Ogawaya is the best hotel I have stayed until now. The amenity perhaps not the best, but I really admire the spirit of service and warm hospitality. A couple of months ago, before checking in Ogawaya, I lost my family’s passport on the train heading to Nagoya. At that moment I was anxious and helpless. As soon as we told the receptionists in Ogawaya, they tried their best to reach out JR customer service and report the lost, and keep tracking the progress in the mean time. God knows I was so touched at the moment of time, and impressed with the Japanese style professional. I believe the founder really turn the service spirit into part of their daily life. I really want to give a big shout out to Ogawaya, but regretfully I can’t remember the names of the gentlemen who gave me the big favor. Not only Onsen, hospitality is absolutely what you can experience in Ogawaya!!! (I found the staff who helped me out! His name is 朱谷俊大 san! Thank you!!!)

Not bad for such price , food is ok room is neat and spring is standard with both inside and outside spring bath. The only thing I found weird is the toilet is on the balcony a long way from the bath room and the washing tap is right on top of the toilet ...it feels weird

Our actual hotel room was a western style room and was in the more modern wing of the hotel. The room itself was nice and had it been day time, there would have been a lovely view of the river running through Gero. The actual hotel itself and the service left a LOT to be desired. It's actually like a rabbit warren with so many levels and elevators that you need to take even to get out the building. We got lost inside the hotel so many times. Whoever designed this place drank waaaay too much sake. It's like they joined 3 old hotels together. To get out of our room to outside, we had to get a lift down, walk through the hotel and get another lift to the ground floor as our lift didn't take us to the ground floor. The most annoying part was that upon check in - we weren't told about any of the hotel services or in particular that you actually have to book the private onsens in advance. So when we came down at 6pm to ask about how we could use the private onsens - they said they were all booked out for the evening. So, i asked, can we book one for the morning and they said that the private onsens aren't for use in the morning before check out time. Half the point of us booking this hotel was so that we could come and have a nice quiet private onsen experience. So basically we paid a premium for this hotel for this reason and didn't even get to use the service that we came for. Nothing is mentioned (in english anyway) in the rooms themselves about needing to book a private onsen in advance. We did end up using the public hotel onsen which was quite nice. Disappointingly though the "outdoor" onsen doesn't have any sort of view and is mostly covered in, except for a gap at the top of the screen to allow outside air in. In order to get to these outdoor onsen there's some quite dodgy and steep stairs which you have to traverse with bare feet. So if you're a little unstable or elderly - keep that in mind. The actual hotel is quite old and I think we were lucky that we got an updated room. The rest of the hotel looks like it was THE place to be maybe 20 years ago - but now it just looks old fashioned. If I ever came back to Gero - I definitely wouldn't choose to stay here. If anybody is wondering if they should come and stay in Gero - it's a nice little town - but i would personally skip it and go straight to Takayama down the road - or go and check out Gujo Hachiman not far from here. We ended up driving to Gujo and back 3 times in 3 days because it was so awesome!

Lots of hype but so, so experience only. A. Parking is not at the hotel B. The hotel is an agglomération of many premises making it messy to navigate within the hotel C. Rooms are large by Japanese standards but average size by North American standards. D. View from the hotel is really so, so and certainly not the one from the picture they show. E. Breakfast is mainly Japanese style food. Western food is terrible. F. Dinner (included) is canteen style while they try to present it as fine dining. Food is definitely not fresh. We ended up cooking their sashimi before eating them. G. Onsen, nothing to shout about. Average. In conclusion definitely not value for money.
