「ゆうれい地蔵」とは何だか名前からして怖いが、気になったので行ってみた。それは港区高輪の、都バスが頻繁に走る、交通量の多い通りに面した「光福寺」にある。ひとつもおどろおどろしいところではない。お寺の門をくぐって左に向かって歩いていくと、墓地の入口にお稲荷さんの祠があり、すぐそばに小屋掛けの「幽霊地蔵」さんがある。なるほど、童形の、穏やかに微笑むお地蔵さんではなく、光背に浮き彫りになっているのは、お顔はまだしも、胸のあたりはリアルな肋骨というにはあまりにも少ない２本くらいのあばら骨、そして足元に向かってどんどん細くなる、江戸時代の幽霊絵のような不思議なレリーフである。いまは屋根の下におられるが、昔は雨ざらしで、たまたまこのように風化したのかも知れない。だが、当方もそれなりにお地蔵さんや道祖神の石像を見てきたが、こんなのは見たことがない。「幽霊」の語に引き寄せられてか、このお地蔵さんにも「幽霊飴」の伝説があるという。近所の飴屋に、若い女が雨の日も風の日も、夜ごと飴を買いに来る。これを不思議に思った主人が跡をつけてみると、寺の墓地に入っていき、新しい墓のところで姿が消える。赤子の泣き声がするので、墓を掘り返すと、女の亡骸のそばに新生児がいて、救い出される。幽霊は、身重で亡くなった母親で、赤子を養うために飴を買っていたのであった……という話で、日本各地に分布しているものであるから、ここが出どころとは言えないだろう。
