★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was there in Sep 2016, it was very nice place and very unique, Being there, the unique gassho-zukuri (thatched) houses took us back in time and give us a glimpse into what life might like for people who once lived there. It has a very peace look. Great spot to visit.

What I loved about the village was that they had stands where you could prop your phone in order to take a photo in case there wasn't anyone around to help you. Do explore the village as there is a suuuuuuuper long slide from the top of the hill. It's a long walk up but it is SO worth it!!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Skansen (open air museum) located few minutes from Gero by walk. The tickets can be purchased right at the entrance, or in one of the hotels where you stay - in this case there is some discount. This area is divided by road and connected by a passage under the road. There is a souvenir shop and also nice and small restaurant.
Most old houses can be visited with display of old rural stuff and also display of traditional Japanese dolls.
The other half is with nice view from the mountain and also offers 100 yen slide from top of the mountain to the bottom - try it, it's really fun!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nice place to see the old style farm houses if you don't have time to go all the way up to Shirakawago. The little restaurant in the park also sells some nice typical Japanese desserts and fresh juices! Nice experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful view. You can feed the big fishes and ducky at the pond. You can have a walk there. When you go up the slope, you will find a very long and fun slide there. Remember to keep ¥100 coin for the sliding for each people.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a wonderful place at walking distance from Giro station. The traditional village looks well preserved and worth time spending. You can enter inside each houses. One of the hut house has free dance performance. Others display the life style of people in the ancient days. There is a nice hot water Onsen. You can use it for free. However, there is one time entry fee.
If you have plan to visit Takayama, drop here on your way for around 1-3 hrs, it's worth the time.
