Art gallery introducing potters of the modern and
contemporary Japanese ceramics scene.

Welcome to Gallery Utsuwakan.

Established in 1984 in the Murasakino area of
Kyoto, Gallery Utsuwakan purveys fine ceramics by
some of Japan’s best contemporary potters.
In Kyoto, the two poles of Japanese art--the
traditional and the avant-garde--have been in
competition for decades. Gallery Utsuwakan offers
a large selection of vessels (utsuwa) and objets d’art
by ceramists who neither rely upon tradition nor
ignore it, but always aim at the creation of original works.

Gallery Utsuwakan is four stories high. The first two
floors consist of a shop filled with the works of a
variety of artists. The third and fourth floors are
exhibition space in which individual and group shows
are launched on a regular basis.

You can buy it at a great price on the first floor. You can meet interesting vessels. I sometimes buy cups because I can buy them at the same price as the ones on the market. There is an exhibition of works on the 2nd and 3rd floors.
