★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An open courtyard surrounded by two levels of shops, Arashiyama Shoryuen is at it's best on level 2. There's a toilet up here, which was handy but more than that there's some really lovely souvenirs to be had. The miniature figurines are particularly cool - think hand painted Darumae, symbol of tenacity and good fortune or Samurai, symbol of protection and courage. Plus there's incense and silk handkerchiefs and chopsticks you can get your name written upon. The staff here are exceptionally friendly and the view goes a long way toward revealing the beauty of the bamboo forest a few hundred metres beyond. The chain rings leading down from the roof are an interesting idea for storm water drainage.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a small outdoor shopping area mostly with tourist food products. Theres a few benches and tables in the shade.
There’s a washroom on the second floor. Bring your own soap or hand sanitizer as none is available in the bathroom.
