昭和三十四年度～三十六年の耕地整理事業の折、今泉用水堀と二郷堀との間に土地を残したそうです。
その後上飯田開発協議会が桜の木を植樹し、憩いの場としたそうです。
植樹の記念碑を建てた昭和五十五年五月より、大町桜と呼称する旨の宣言も書かれております。
今では柵が設けられ、ごみの集積所も設置されてしまいましたが、それでも桜の季節には美しい風景を見せてくれます。
先人の願いの通り、いつまでも市民に愛される場所であり続けて欲しいと思います。
