★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 遠野の町外れには、キツネの関所が何箇所かある。ここもその一つである「キツネの関所」である。棟上げの祝の日町へ帰って行く途中、八幡山を通る時に、酔っていたものだからこんなことを言った。「昔からここには、りこうな狐がいるということだが、本当にいるなら鳴いて聴かせろざい。もしいるならこの魚をやるに」と言って、祝の肴を振りまわした。するとすぐ路傍の林の中で、じゃぐえん、じゃぐえんと狐が三声鳴いた。しかし男はだがこの肴はやらぬから、お前たちの腕で俺から取って見ろと言い棄てて通り過ぎた。周りにいた男たちは「そんな事をいうものじゃ無い」と制したけれど、男の大言は止まない。それでも男を制しながら八幡宮の鳥居近くまで来た時、ちょっと小用を足すから手を放してくれというので、里も近いのでいいだろうと男を放すとよろよろと路傍の畠に入って行ったまま、いつ迄経っても出て来ない。何だ少しおかしいぞとそのあとから行って見ると、祝に著て来た袴羽織のままで、溜池の中へ突落されて半死半生になっていたという。
遠野物語はこんな話が多々ある。厳しい自然を生き里を守るためだと思うと考えることも多い。
