★ ★ ★ ★ ★ サトザクラ系の八重桜で、 例年５月上旬に満開となります。花は淡紅色の大輪で極く短い花軸に密に群生します。「鹽竈」 なる桜は、 堀河天皇の御製（ぎょせい）にその名が見えることから平安時代には成立していたと考えられています。 また、 江戸時代には井原西鶴の小説や近松門左衛門（ちかまつもんざえもん）の戯曲にも登場するほど知名度の高いものでありました。 古来著名な品種として昭和15年に天然記念物に指定されましたが、単木の高齢木であったためその後枯死し、 昭和34年に一時指定解除されました。しかし、鹽竈神社では、この桜の苗木育成に努め、境内に植栽して保存してきました。数多くの桜のうち、古くから広く知られており、学術・文化両面で高く評価されています。
It is a double cherry blossom of the Satozakura family, and it is in full bloom in early May every year. The flowers are large pink flowers and densely cluster on a very short axis. The cherry blossoms called "Shiogama" are thought to have been established during the Heian period because their name can be seen in the work of Emperor Horikawa. In the Edo period, it was so well known that it appeared in the novels of Saikaku Ihara and the plays of Chikamatsu Monzaemon. It was designated as a natural monument as a famous variety from ancient times in 1945, but since it was an old single tree, it died after that, and was temporarily de-designated in 1959. However, at Shiogama Shrine, we have endeavored to grow this cherry tree sapling and planted it in the precincts to preserve it. Of the many cherry blossoms, it has been widely known for a long time and is highly evaluated both academically and culturally.
