★ ★ ★ ★ ★ After snowboarding all day at Yakeyama Hōryō with Yoshi and Rob we stopped at Tsuta Onsen. Yoshi told us that it was one of the oldest onsens in Japan. We entered through, what looked like, the original door being hundred year old planed wood. On the left was a glass case with stuffed game from the northern Japan mountains. There were white minks, different fowl, and other native critters.
On the right, after entering the doorway, is the reception counter. I paid a few hundred yen and went to the water. The natural spring fed pools of water were transforming into steam right before my eyes. I knew the water was hot and I was excited.
If you are ever in the area and need a place to stay the night Tsuta Onsen is also a hotel. When leaving the facility a bus pulled up with dozens of Japanese hotel guests looking to enjoy the same experience that I had.
I give this place two thumbs up!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We stayed in the Tsuta Onsen Ryokan on Mount Hakkoda for one night and adored the entire experience. Surrounding the Japanese Inn is a walking trail which visits six waterways. We walked the trail, dined on a Kaiseki Ryori (traditional Japanese course dinner) in the evening and soaked in a “Kyuan-no-Yu bath” before retiring with a warm Sake. The entire complex is clean and well maintained. The staff are very friendly and some staff understand and speak English. Highly recommended!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If I could I want to give them ten stars! The host of hotel is very helpful and nice to us. Hot spring is comfortable and relax. I also recommend people try their private hot spring room, reasonable price with some privacy you can share with your family or partner. It’s a 100 year old hotel so the atmosphere of traditional Japanese culture is great. However, you need to understand while it has history, the building itself is also old, you might heard some noise from guests of other rooms. Food is also very good.
The location is a bit far, the best way to come to the hotel is taking high speed rail then the shuttle bus. But remember to book the shuttle bus in advance, it’s required by the hotel.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Old ryokan (japanese style inn) with unique hot spring. The building is well kept and very clean. Food is nice. Indoor bath is unique in terms of the way water comes. The water comes from the bottom of the wooden bathtub , which means the water isn’t exposed to the air until comming to the bathtub. The hot spring itself is clear without any smell. I like hot springs with some characteristics, so I rated -1.
