岩谷城は中世から近世にかけての山城で、現在も土塁や空堀、水堀の一部が残されている。
発掘調査の結果から、築城年代は中世までにさかのぼることが分かっており、葛西氏の家臣である江刺氏によって築城されたと考えられる。
江戸時代には伊達氏の支配下に置かれ、幕末まで伊達氏一門の岩谷堂伊達氏(氏岩城)の居館として機能し、岩谷堂要害と呼ばれた。
また本丸には延慶4年(1311年)の古碑や銀杏(イチョウ)の古木が残されています。

About Iwatani Castle Ruins From the information board,
Iwatani Castle is a mountain castle from the Middle Ages to the early modern era.
From the results of the excavation survey, it is known that the castle era dates back to the Middle Ages, and it is thought that it was built by Mr. Esashi, the vassal of Mr. Kasai.
During the Edo period, it was under the control of Date, and until the end of the Edo period, it functioned as the residence of Date Ichigayado Date (Mr. Iwaki), and was called Iwatani Persecution.
Also in Honmaru, ancient monuments from Yankei 4 (1311) and old trees of Ginkgo (Ginkgo) are left.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 冬場は藤原の郷方面からの道は閉鎖されています(どんなに暖かくても)ので、高校側から登ると良いでしょう(車でも大丈夫)。旧仙台藩の要害の中では比較的遺構が残っている方だと思います。
In winter, the road from the Fujiwara area is closed (no matter how warm it is), so it's a good idea to climb from the high school side (or by car). I think that some of the fortresses of the former Sendai clan have relatively remains.
