★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 山寺に行くなら垂水遺跡にも行ってほしい。なぜこの地に山寺ができたのか。慈覚大師円仁様がここを選んだ理由がわかるはず。私のお薦めは、午前中に垂水遺跡を訪れ、山を歩き、昼食に蕎麦をいただき、1000余段の階段を上って山寺参り。
 If you go to Yamadera, I want you to go to Tarumi Heritage. Why was Yamadera built here? You can see why Ennin, the Jikaku Daishi, chose this place. My recommendation is to visit the Tarumi Heritage site in the morning, walk in the mountains, have soba for lunch, and climb over 1000 steps to visit Yamadera.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 鳥居の横に2台ほど駐車するところがありました。雪の中行く場合は長靴が必須。最後は階段が雪に埋まっていたので登るのが過酷でしたが神秘的な場所で頑張った甲斐はありました。
There was a place to park about two cars next to the torii gate. Boots are a must if you go in the snow. At the end, the stairs were buried in snow, so it was difficult to climb, but it was worth the effort in a mysterious place.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great place to visit. Very accessible and easy to combine with Yamadera. They have maps at the tourist office and there are many signs, so it's not difficult to find your way. Very quiet: we literally met no other people when we were there, even though Yamadera was swarming with tourists.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Most of us come to yamadera and visit the shrine which is amazing, spiritual and historic in of itself. But this place is kind of bring your journey a full circle. Not only one gets to visit the site where Yamagata city started ( in historical settlement terms) but also were the journey of enlightenment occurred. Just a few blocks away from the main shrine trailhead, the access to this historical gem starts. It's quite possible that you are the only one on the trail (as it was in my case in my journey). One literally can feel the silence around oneself and be one with nature. The more deep we go in the mountain the more you feel the significance of this place. The training ground, the enlightenment shrine, the rock formations... Everything there will make you humble, feel the energy of the place and make you one with the energy that sits here. No tourist chaos, no formal roads, just the sign post and you... Highly recommend for anyone and everyone who has come here for their spiritual journey and not just be a tourist. If you looking for attractive tourist stop here, you might not want to visit. I'll definitely be coming back here.
