This was a great little find, fresh udon that’s made in front of you, fresh and delicious tempura all for a very reasonable price. We went for lunch during the week and locals were queuing out the door which is always a good sign

The noodle was extraordinary there as the udon is actually the best one I had ever had! However, after we paid the bill, they came to kick us out while we were checking how to get back to our hotel. Of course we understand the space was limited, however, it's still very rude to just kick people out...

I picked up a Kyoto food based manga series a few days ago and each chapter is dedicated to the character's misadventures centered around a local cuisine. One such chapter was written around this place, 大河 (Taiga). Getting out to Takeda is a small trek, but for this meal it was well worth it! The atmosphere is steamy and humble and the smell is divine. The staff are also very charismatic and kind, but you'd do well to come armed with a little Japanese. Best of all, the food was more enticing in person than the beautifully drawn panels of the manga, and I may or may not have been making similar faces of delight with every bite as the protagonists had. For those curious, the manga is いとし京都めし!
