★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Mt. Fuji is sacred so a pilgrimage to climb the mountain is a very desirable spiritual undertaking.
This year (2020/2021?), Mt. Fuji will not open for climbing by the faithful due to the Covid pandemic. Japan is currently closed to tourists from many countries including the US.
Many shrines and temples around Tokyo have surrogate Mt. Fuji 富士塚 (often made with rocks from Mt. Fuji) that can be climbed (or visited) without having to journey to the actual peak.
One of those 富士塚 Fujizuka is located at the 富岡八幡宮 Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine. 深川富士 The Fukugawa Fujizuka is located in the North West corner of the shrine precincts. The surrogate is only one meter high and is ornamental. It has a very pleasing shape and is topped with a shrine 富士浅間神社 to the Mt. Fuji deity, Sengen.
