滋賀県大津市、琵琶湖南西の長等山中腹に広大な敷地を有する三井寺は、正式名称を「長等山園城寺（おんじょうじ）」といい、天台寺門宗の総本山です。平安時代、第五代天台座主・智証大師円珍和尚の卓越した個性により、天台別院として中興されました。以来今日まで続く千二百年以上の歴史の中で、源平の争乱、南北朝の争乱等による焼き討ちなど幾多の法難に遭遇しましたが、智証大師への信仰に支えられた人々によって支えられつつ、苦難を乗り越えてきた様から、「不死鳥の寺」としても知られています。
