A foreigner hired in the early Meiji era, who was abandoned Buddha, was originally a Western-style painting expansionist, but although he "discovered" the image of "Ancient Greek and Roman" in Japanese art and turned to a Japanese-style painting revivalist, it was actually "originally". There is a tomb of Fenollosa, who is described as "returning to himself as a classicist of Japan" (Shuji Takashina, "History of Modern Japanese Art"). The reason why he was buried here was that he received a reprimand at Mitsui-ji Temple before he was alive and loved this temple, which is the last temple. The beauty of Lake Biwa and the mountains on the opposite bank, and the blueness of the sky, which can be seen from the garden, which is now so rough that trees can block the view, seems to enhance the refreshing feeling. However, from the entrance of the temple, it looks like a narrow beast road and it is difficult to understand, and the temple is closed and there is no sign of people. Almost no one will visit. In other words, it seems that I want you to leave it alone, and I remember going around and gently turning back on the narrow path of the grass.

It is the head of Sonjoji Temple (Mitsui-dera), about a 15-minute walk from Mitsui-ji. Have created an opportunity to spread Japanese art to the world (the evaluation varies) familiar with Fenollosa and the Ukiyo-e collection at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts? Biggero's tomb is a small number of visitors, most of which seems to be the purpose of the visit. Although I had heard in advance the evaluation that the condition could not be reached, it was true, but the expectations were low, and I was impressed when I looked at the grave of Fenollosa and Bigelow quietly resting. The view of Lake Biwa selected by Fenollosa is a shame that it was obstructed by the baseball field and Tawaman, but I also think that it is also the taste of the change of the times. However, as a tourist attraction, it is a general purpose, and the motive that a local person visits does not come to mind either. It is such a place.

October 2018 I visited at "Otsu Town Aruki". I have only seen it in history textbooks, but on the map I participated in the grave of Fenollosa in Otsu City because I wanted to see the garden of Homyoin, where the grave is located. The tea room was also under repair, and the garden had a slightly rough atmosphere, probably due to the influence of the typhoon this summer, and the fusuma paintings were moved to the Otsu History Museum for preservation. Why Japan, why Buddhism, why Buddhist culture, why Otsu's Mitsui-ji Temple. In connection with the background of Fenollosa, I was able to enjoy and listen to the views of the priest. I will read the related book about it again. (I posted the situation at this time in "Fenollosa and Bigelow" on Saturday and Sunday Otsu. I hope you read it.)

It is the only remaining temple in the north temple of Onjoji (Mitsui-ji) and is located along the Tokai Nature Trail. Below you will see the former Army site, which has been expanded since Fenollosa left Japan, such as the City Hall and Ojiyama Sports Park. Expectations are high for the temples and landscapes that Fenollosa loved, but it is difficult to remember those days because the city of Otsu has been damaged by the loss of cultural properties due to air strikes. It seems that the water of Shugendo Waterfall in front of the gate has muddy the stone steps and the Tokai Nature Trail. The garden leading to the grave (not the garden seen in Mitsui-ji Temple) is also forested, and I feel that it is open to the public for a fee (100 yen) for those who visit the grave.

Although it has a reputation as an Ara-ji temple, the precincts and gardens that seem to have stopped when looking down on the city of Otsu calm the mind. It's too late to think about how beautiful the city would have been if it weren't for the high-rise condominiums on the shore of the lake. However, the drainage of the waterfall flowing from the pond leaks to the approach road and is flooded, so it is not recommended for those who dislike dirt. (There is a road that the institute can drive through, so it's okay if you climb from there.) The mountain gate in the middle of the approach and the treasure tower overlooking the shores of Lake Biwa, which were seen in the photo a few years ago, have already disappeared. I'm just wondering if I can save and restore it, not just the owner's problem.

A temple with the tomb of Fenollosa. The garden is wonderful, but I'm worried that there is no one to manage it, because it's a little rough. I would like to see the relics left by Fenollosa and Bigelow, so please manage the temple. Otsu City? ??

An overall nice temple that seems to be rarely visited. The temple has a lot of potential to great attraction for the local area, but unfortunately the owners seem to not care about maintaining the grounds. A few years ago the pond underwent some "maintenance", but it looks like it was a very amateur job. Sludge from the dredging was dumped into a ravine and nearly overran a popular hiking trail. The unsightly scars from the "maintenance" remain. Trees and bushes were literally butchered to death.
