社伝によれば、桓武天皇延暦二十年（８０１）坂上田村麻呂東夷征伐の、祈願成就により素戔鳴尊を祀り牛頭天王と称し勧請の由。
堂宇は寛政十年（１７９８）十月再建され、王政維新神仏混交の名称廃止で明治三年（１８７０）六月、村社の列し八雲神社と改称した。
本社は従来旧長島村長部若宮（北上川を距る数丁のところ）に遷座のところ、大正元年九月二十三日の大暴風に遭い本殿・拝殿を大破したことと、北上川氾濫による度々の水害に見舞われていたことから大正二年（１９１３）四月、現在地に修復移転遷座、その後拝殿・神楽殿・鐘楼等新築され現在に至る。
古くは疫病退散の信仰があったが、現在は五穀豊穣の作神、諸願成就として氏子の信奉を集めている。
本社の氏子は現在六分落（以前は七部落）あり、例祭はもとより恒例の祭り一切の奉仕は年々部落毎の臨番でなされており、これは昔から受け継がれている。
