恋文を埋めたとされる文塚、深草少将百夜通いゆかりのカヤの木などがあり、境内南西端に残る古風な井戸にも名前がついている。
「小町化粧井戸」というその井戸は絶世の美女・小町が用いたとされるもので、変わった形をしている。水面へ降りる道が付いているところなどは「まいまい井戸」にも似る。また、井戸の近くには「化粧橋」という涸れ川に架かる橋が残っているが、位置からしてこの井戸からの水を流したもののようである。
今となっては水脈を辿るのも容易ではないが、残された井戸に上古の人々の暮らしを思ってみる。
随心院庫裏前では石に描かれた十二単の御馴染みの小町像を見たが、伝えられる小町の活動年代だと衣装は「百人一首のお姫様」ではなく奈良期のものに近かったのではないかと思う。
