Temple dedicated to Ono no Komachi. We were there during the Hanezu-michi ceremony at the end of March, a show which was well worth the admission. There were blooming plum trees and also a nice walk through the temple itself.

I think I was a little too early (got there before 10am), and it didn't help that it was a wet, cold and dreary day. I will admit that I didn't explore the temple itself because I had already bought stuff from the flea market, but despite the 3 star rating, I think this tiny little place will be worth a visit on a fine day. :-) For one thing, most of the stuff are very non-commercial, unlike what you would tend to find in the larger flea markets. The people are also very sweet, gentle and kind - my guess is it's because it's a place off the beaten track. The theme of this little market is "hand made" or home-made, and you can clearly see that the folks obviously find much joy and put much live in their products. I bought a little pine bonsai grown in a bamboo section for just 1000 yen. There was actually a couple of lovely mini rock gardens that cost a little more but I thought the pine "tree" would hold more meaning for the people I was buying it for. I would have loved to be able to tuck into some piping hot oden but like I said, it was dreary and I was too early. I think 11am would have been a better time to visit. Still, someone had set up 2 braziers and small wooden benches so people could keep warm despite the cold. The flea market is held every first Sunday of the month. If you're tired of the madding crowd around Kyoto station, Gion and major flea markets at Toji and Kitano-Tenmangu shrine, you may want to check out this little place for a refreshing change of pace.

Beautiful temple. We bought what looked like a journal at the gift shop but it was actually a sort of collector's item for you to take to various temples. They charge you 300 yen to stamp and calligraphy a page as a souvenir from each temple you visit.
