It was an unexpected encounter with a post station on the highway. Zenkoji Nishikaido Omi-juku is an old highway that I would like to visit again.

Omi Village is a peaceful and beautiful mountain village to the west of Mt. Kamuriki. Omi is an old settlement that remains as a public post station under the ancient decree system. It was a village where the people of Omi lived. During the Warring States period, it prospered as a castle town of Mr. Omi Hattori. During the Edo period, it became a post town on the Zenkoji Highway (Hokkoku Highway Nishiwaki). The ancient decree system was a mechanism to convey the authority of the Yamato kingdom to each region and to tribute agricultural products and special products of each region as taxes and levies. Therefore, we built public roads such as Tosan-do and built a station-based system that connects bases along the public road with horses. At the beginning of the 8th century, Omi seemed to have become a post station on the government road from Kinai to Echigo. After that, in the Heian period, Omi had a mansion of Ise Jingu called Mikuriya and a government office for its rule. The place name Omi originates from the fact that there was a village where the people of the Omi department, who report directly to the kingship, lived, and hemp textiles were produced and delivered to the kingship. Omi, the origin of Omi Township, is said to mean the work of processing the epidermis of hemp and mulberry and spinning threads, or a group of people who are in charge of it. Before the establishment of the Ritsuryo system, a group of officials called the people of the department under the direct control of the Yamato kingdom and who belonged to Mr. Asahi settled in this area. Its ancestors may be migrants. When the Ritsuryo system was formed in the 7th century, a government road / station system was established to connect the kingship of Kinai with the eastern Japan and Hokuetsu areas. It can be said that the origin of the Zenkoji Highway was a branch line official road that diverged from the Tosan Road, passed through Chikuma District in Shinano, and headed for Echigo Kokufu. Before that, this village, where the people of Omi lived, became a post station on the government road.
