★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 越後米沢街道十三峠の中で最も難所とされる峠。
旧街道はR113旧道へ下った先の落合地蔵尊から、およそ4.7kmの道のりとのこと。
明治27年に三島通庸により開削された車道は、宇津トンネル飯豊側の「この先トンネル～」の白看板付近にある栗の木の下にわずかに舗装された路面があり、こちらから分岐します。
旧街道は地元保存会の方々の手による刈払いが行き届いており、要所には案内板も設置されているため、峠歩きを楽しませてくれるでしょう。
旧車道と旧街道は時折合流しながら峠を目指しますが、街道から外れた車道部分はほぼ手付かずになっている場所もあり、特に飯豊側の峠に至る二重ヘアピン付近は藪が深く倒木や灌木、落石などで荒れています。
しかし路盤自体はよく残っているため道を追うこと自体は難しくありません。
小国側で2箇所の崩落地点、飯豊側は落石防止柵によりそれぞれ道幅1mほどになっている箇所があり、注意する必要があります。
飯豊側から登っていくと街道は峠の鞍部東側から、車道は簡易トイレの裏に出てきます。
峠にたどり着くと車道の脇に「宇津峠」の標柱と飯豊町を示す朽ち果てた青看板があり、馬頭観世音の碑がある場所から登っていくと、峠の歴史を物語る介茶屋跡や石碑群などが残されています。
江戸期に良寛和尚、明治期にイザベラ・バードなどが峠を越え、変わったところだと1964年の東京オリンピックでは、聖火リレーもこの峠を越えたそうです。

The old road and the old highway occasionally join together to aim for the pass, but there are some places where the roadway deviating from the highway is almost untouched, especially near the double hairpin that leads to the pass on the Iide side. It is rough due to shrubs and falling rocks.
However, it is not difficult to follow the road because the roadbed itself remains well.
It is necessary to pay attention to the two collapse points on the small country side and the Iide side where the road width is about 1m due to the rock fall prevention fence.
As you climb from Iide side, the highway comes out from the saddle east side of the pass, and the roadway comes out behind a simple toilet.
When you arrive at the pass, you will find the pillars of "Utsu Pass" and a decayed blue sign indicating Iide-machi on the side of the driveway, and climb from the place where the monument of Bado Kanzeon is made. Etc. are left.
It is said that the Torch Relay also crossed this pass at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics when it was changed in the Edo era during the Kanto Ryo and the Isabella Bird in the Meiji era.
