★ ★ ★ ★ ★ かつて麓側大平集落から現在の不伐の森近辺の桂谷・前野集落、そしてダムとなった木地山を結んでいた道と共にあった峠です。
集落跡地には山之神社跡や耕作地・屋敷跡など、かつての生活を偲ばせる風景があります。
現在は飯豊町道及び林道として利用されている道が通っており、峠を越え、下りになった先で車道は行き止まりになっています。
峠とは直接つながっていませんが、60年ほど前には三洋道なる車道がその先の木地山まで通っていたということです。
また「西山新道」という古い道が峠で交差しており、これは長井と新潟県村上のおよそ75kmを結ぶ塩の道でした。
現在の野川第一発電所付近から沢を辿り明神平峠へ抜け、ここから西へ進路を取り三体山へ登り小国の石滝へと抜ける道で、長井の商人達が私財から工費を出し、慶応3年（1867）に完成しました。
しかし時は幕末の動乱期であり、翌1868年に戊辰戦争が勃発。
幕府側へついた米沢藩が官軍から逃れるために、難所にあった橋等を落としそのまま廃道となり、現在は軌跡も不鮮明になってしまったとのこと。
峠に立つ標柱には「西山新道開削道…点の…」と全文は不明瞭ながらも書かれており、そこには確かに道が残されていました。

In order to escape from the military, Yonezawa Kaoru who arrived at the shogunate side dropped the bridges that were in difficult places and became abandoned as it was, and now the trajectory has become unclear.
On the pillar that stands at the foot, “Nishiyama Shindo Kaido ... Dono…” was written in an unclear manner, but there was certainly a road left.
