茅葺きの家で建物自体は大きくないが、きれいな庭がある。山を見上げると津和野城の石垣が見える。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 津和野藩医の子で啓蒙思想家であった西周の旧宅。21歳まで暮らした家とされています。津和野川をはさみ、森鴎外旧居のちょうど向かいあたりに位置します。母屋と土蔵が残っています。勉強熱心だった周は、この蔵で必死に勉強したと言われています。「哲学」「感覚」などの言葉を生み出した啓蒙思想家が、この蔵でどれだけ思考に耽っていたかと考えると感慨深いものがありました。そして、ここへは津和野川にかかる常盤橋を渡って来ましたが、雨が降っている中、小川のある田舎道を散策し、とてものどかな気持ちになりました。派手な観光地ではありませんが、偉人の原点を知れる場所だと思います。
