中世頃の建物があったが北上一キロメートルの所に最明寺があり立派なお寺になっています。遺跡名は、北１kmにある最明寺の故地と伝えられていることから名付けられました。中世のころに寺が建っていた可能性はありますが、採集された奈良時代の瓦が備後国府跡推定地(府中市)や備後国分寺跡(神辺町)から出土したものと同じ文様で、すぐ南側の切通しを古代山陽道が通っていたことや、最前寺の山号が「馬宿山」であることから、古代には「駅家(品治駅)」があったと考える説が有力です。中・近世の石塔類もあり、各時代の複合遺跡といえます。２００７年(平成１９年)３月ふくやまの魅力づくり事業福山市教育委員会備陽探訪の会２０２１年(令和３年)９月５日編集
