The weaver was temporarily evacuated due to the Onin War, but it was reconstructed again after the turbulence. Since the early modern period, it has become the center of Japan's leading high-class textile industry as a production center for Nishijin weaving, and continues to this day. The area surrounded by Horikawa-dori in the east, Shichihonmatsu-dori in the west, Imamiya Shrine Gojo in the north, and Ichijo-dori or Nakadachiuri-dori in the south is called Nishijin.
