Went here at 1:30 pm for lunch and still waited in line for abou 1 hour. We had some unagi in Hamamatsu just the day before at a decent place, but this Maruya Honten was far far better according to my son. I guess the long waiting line is proof itself.

The queue was not too long at off-peak weekday dinner. The taste was alright, but the rice was extremely dry. The menu states roughly 1 whole eel is included in the set meal, however the eel served do not look like 1 eel. And they forgot to serve me soup broth. The menu is different in English and Japanese. Apparently I saw eel liver on the Japanese menu but not on the English one. And when I tried to order the eel liver, the waitress told me it was sold out. And it was only 30 minutes after it’s opening for dinner... strange. Not sure it is they do not want to sell it to foreigners.

Worth a queue! Expected to wait for 40mins or could be more during peak time. But the food is worth your time. Egg roll with unagi is so tasty.

Good Hitsumabushi. During peak time, you may have to wait up to 80 minutes to get a table. The taste is ok but the sauce is a bit on the light side. It would have been nice if it's more intense. The unagi is ok. The skin is partly crispy and there might be some small bones but it's not much of an annoyance when eating. A plus is that after the meal they serve a small cup of Japanese green tea (which is similar to sencha but stronger and more aromatic).

One of many extremely satisfying meals which I had whilst in Japan. I have had unagi, or eel, at many restaurants across Japan and this is one of the better places. Even though Maruya Honten is a chain, they sure make delicious unagi. What made this unagi stand out from other restaurants is that it is prepared Nagoya style. Some people may not know this, but all across Japan, unagi is usually steamed and then grilled and served. What Nagoya does different is that they do away with the steaming of the unagi and go straight to grilling. I find that the umami flavours were just a bit more concentrated. Now, what I ordered was the traditional hitsumabushi meal - grilled eel over rice. Grilled eel like I said was delicious and grilled to perfection, flavourful, soft - perfect. The rice was amazing with just the right amount of savoury and sweet unagi sauce. What makes this meal special is the way it is eaten. First you enjoy yourself a bowl of the rice and unagi as is, so you may taste how the unagi and rice are alone. Second bowl is to be enjoyed with your choice of condiments. In the form of shiso leaves, green onions, pickled vegetables, and fresh wasabi. This gives the meal a totally different element of flavours. Third bowl is to be enjoyed exactly like the second bowl, but this time with a soup or tea poured over top the rice and unagi! This is like rice and unagi served three different ways! All delicious! And if you haven't devoured everything by your third bowl - which I highly doubt - you may enjoy the rest however you please! Please, in my opinion it is something one must try while in Nagoya, as unagi is not prepared like this anywhere else in Japan.

I think my 40-min-wait was worthwhile. The unagi don was grilled perfectly in aroma and flavor. My kids loved the egg tamago eel as well. I personal really enjoyed the soup way to eat it traditionally. Service is within the standard.

One of the must eats in Nagoya. Situated on 9th floor of Meitesu main building at JR Nagoya station. Went at 1040am and managed to sit down around 1105. Overallnot bad but not overwhelming. The chicken wing is tender and a little spicy. Grilled eel is crispy on the outside. Liver is good. Soup for the rice/eel will be given upon request.

Reviews in Trip Advisor said this restaurant is the 3rd best restaurant in Nagoya for local cuisine. You can tell from the queue outside the restaurant. We had to wait for 50 minutes but it was worth it. The hitsumabushi or unagi was the best we have had in Japan or elsewhere. It has grilled taste, a bit crispy on the outside but juicy inside. It was not sweet at all. You are supposed to eat in in 3 different ways, and the last one is by pouring soup into the rice and unagi. This last part was very very delicious. By the way, you need to ask the waiter for the soup before the end of your meal. The waiters speaks fluent English and are very helpful.
