★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nyakuoji Jinja Shrine, also known as Kumano-Nyakuoji Shrine is located on the south-end of Philosopher's Walk. It was established in 1160 by Emperor Go-Shirakawa ( " Go = Ex-, retired, late " Emperor Shirakawa ) .The Emperor designated Kumano Gongen as a guardian of Zenrin-ji in Eikando which is located 5-minute-walk north of Nyakuoji Shrine and this shrine later became a guardian shrine of entire “Nyakuoji” area.
