塩谷民部（みんぶ）という長者の屋敷があり、豪壮な屋敷、大勢の使用人、広い馬場、農地を持ち、鍛冶屋も抱え農具や武器を作らせていた。
源頼義・義家親子一行が前九年合戦（1051～1062年）で、奥州に向かう東山道を北上した際、この屋敷に宿泊し、長者は豪華な御馳走を振る舞った。翌朝、出発する義家は、家来千人分の食料と雨具を用意するように頼み、長者は難なく整え、義家は長者の力に驚いた。
都に帰る際も一行は長者の屋敷に宿泊、長者は前回にも増して盛大にもてなし、翌朝一行を見送った。しかし、その夜、倉庫や使用人の家から一斉に火の手が上がり、長者の屋敷は炎に包まれ灰となった。
長者の有り余る財力を恐れた義家の仕業と語り継がれている。遺跡では、実際に真っ黒な炭化米がよく見つかる。焼かれた倉庫に備蓄されていた米といわれている。
他にも義家が長者の屋敷を焼き討ちにする似たような伝承は茨城県や福島県にもある。

There was an elder mansion called Minbu Shionobu, which had a magnificent mansion, a large number of servants, a large dressing area, farmland, and a blacksmith who made farm tools and weapons.
Gen Yoriyoshi and the family of Yoshiya and his family stayed in this mansion when they went north on the Higashiyama road heading for Oshu in the previous nine-year battle (1051-1106). The next morning, the righteous departed, asked to prepare food and rain gear for a thousand people, and the elders were prepared without difficulty.
When returning to the city, the group stayed in the manor's mansion, the elders were more entertaining than the last time, and they left off the next morning. However, that night, the hands of the fire rose from the warehouse and the servant's house all at once, and the elder mansion was wrapped in flames and turned into ashes.
It is handed down to the work of a righteous man who fears the wealth of the elders. In the ruins, you can often find black carbonized rice. It is said that the rice was stored in a baked warehouse.
There are other similar traditions in Ibaraki and Fukushima prefectures where the righteous family burns down the house of the elder.
