この説は、楠木氏は古代豪族・橘氏の後裔と称しており、「観世系図」に依れば、能の創始者としてしられる観阿弥の母は平櫛荘の橘正遠(正成の父)の娘、すなわち正成の姉妹と記されていることによります。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 福万寺、上之島一帯は条里割がよく残り、その境界は、高安郡条里と河内郡条里の境に位置しています。この付近は、玉櫛荘と呼ばれた摂関家の荘園跡です。その名称は、平安時代の藤原實資の日記である小右記に初めてみられます。鎌倉時代の藤原兼仲の日記である勧仲記（かんちゅうき）には、ここに住んでいた武士たちが、本所や周辺の寺社と対立するようになったことが記されています。昭和５７年、上之島小学校の建設にあたり発掘調査を実施したところ、鎌倉時代の武士の屋敷跡や道路などの遺構が検出され、中国製磁器（じき）や鏃、刀、宋銭、硯（すずり）などが出土しました。【出典『史跡の道・説明石板』八尾郷土文化推進協議会・八尾市教育委員会、1986年】
