中甚兵衛による大和川の付け替えに伴い、
干上がった川底が新田に転用されました。
この付近の開発を担当したのが山中庄兵衛正永と本山弥右衛門重英で
そのため山本新田と名付けられました。
新田と言っても元は天井川の川底、
砂地で周囲より一段高いことから
コメを作るには水はけが良すぎ、
綿花が作られるようになりました。
八尾市で歯ブラシの製造が盛んなのは、
綿花による繊維産業の応用だと思いますし、
JR柏原駅付近に化学工場が多いのも、
綿の種から油を搾ったことから始まっているそうです。
