★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 明から来朝した隠元隆奇が万治元年1658年に江戸深川に開創した黄檗宗のお寺でしたが、明治43年1910年にこちらに移転しました。
本尊は釈迦弁尼像です。
山門の四脚門は宇和島藩伊達家から寄進されました。明治後期に現在は廃寺になってしまった新宿の奏雲寺から移築したもので、目黒区の指定文化財です。
境内の梵鐘は日本の伝統の様式に中国の柔らかさを取り入れた独特の造りというもので、東京都の指定有形文化財です。
文化四年永代橋崩落横死者供養塔という慰霊塔があり、深川八幡の祭礼の時に人手が多く、その重さで橋が落ちて千数百人もの人々が亡くなったという悲劇があったそうです。
九重の石塔もあり、武田信玄の屋形に置かれていたと伝わっています。
そんなに広い境内ではないのですが見所がありました。

御本尊は釈迦如来坐像。
黄檗宗の寺院の山門は竜宮門が多い様に感じますが、海福寺は朱塗りの四脚門。
この四脚門は宇和島藩伊達家の寄進によるもので、新宿区上落合にあった同じ黄檗宗の泰雲寺に建てられ、廃寺になった際に海福寺が合寺し、同時に移築されたそう。

永代橋の崩落は深川八幡の祭礼の際に押し寄せた江戸庶民約１０００人が命を落とした江戸の大惨事であった。（写真）
