If you want to glimpse another side of Tokyo, a visit here is highly recommended. It is the second-oldest temple in Tokyo (733!), and the center of a complex of religious sites around springs that emerge from the topography of the area. The streets leading up to the temple area are lively with restaurants and sweets and souvenir shops. Soba noodles are the area specialty. There are also two botanical gardens, a hot spring, and a castle mound in the immediate surroundings. Different seasons bring different events and natural beauty, but the rainy season of June/July and the autumn leaves in November/December are particularly atmospheric times to visit.

Japanese Soba Noodles & Beautiful Temple An extremely beautiful temple area with lovely natural sights and the biggest carps I have seen so far in Japan! This place really is a hidden gem a bit further off the central regions of Tokyo. There are many Japanese soba restraunts or shops in the park. Next to the tample, there is a botanical garden, and is is also good. Especially visiting in autum season such as late November is recommended to see autum leaves.

A beautiful temple next to a wonderful botanical garden and dog run. There are traditional streets sellers making delicious soba noodles, manju and dango. There are also pottery workshops available. Once a month, on the 17th, it’s possible to have a special goshuin that protects from illnesses and wards off evil.

What a beautiful temple. I had an absolutely amazing time here today. A very kind and extremely generous Japanese man gave us a free, full on tour explaining the history as we went, all out of the goodness of his heart. It brought so much color and depth to the experience. What a blessing. If anyone of you are ever interested in reading up on the history, read the book he published! You will not regret it! Beautiful temple compound, and great for bicycle trips as well in the Chofu area. This is apparently the second oldest temple in Tokyo after Asakusa’s Sensoji. There are a lot of soba restaurants around and souvenir shops. We actually painted our own coffee mug in a pottery workshop offered right next to the temple. It’s a great day trip from Tokyo and the area can be mistaken easily for one of Kyoto’s temple areas.

Beautiful temple. I couldn't eat the icecream or try many things outside of it because it was closed. But it was still a great stop.

We went to visit the gardens and didn’t spent much time here, but the fall colours and setting are very nice. Certainly worth a (possibly longer) visit.
