如意輪寺の墓地入口にある水子地蔵尊です。授かったお子さんが流産してしまったり、あるいはいろいろな事情で中絶してしまった時に、お参りする対象が水子地蔵です。本来「水子」は「すいじ」と読んで生後間もない赤ちゃんの事を指します。赤ちゃんは産まれた当初は肉体も魂もまだ「人間」として確立していない、不安定な存在なので、流れていく「水」という字を当てて「水子」というらしいです。しかしながら、いつの時代からか、水子を生まれた赤ちゃんの事ではなく、流産または人工中絶によって亡くなった胎児の事を指して「みずこ」と読むようになったそうです。江戸時代をふくめいわゆる流れてしまった方の「水子」は多数存在していたものの、特にその魂の行方について心配する風習はありませんでした。人間の魂はあくまで生まれてから7日たった以降しか宿らないと考えられていたためです。しかしながら、1970年代ごろから水子にも魂があるという考えが広がっていったそうです。言われてみると、あまり古いお地蔵さまに水子地蔵はありませんし、胎児のエコー検査や、原爆や公害など特に戦中戦後にかけて胎内にいる赤ちゃんに外的な要因から発育がうまくいかないなど明らかになったのは、歴史的にみるとごく最近の事なのでしょうね。私にはあまり縁のないお地蔵様ですが、これからお世話になる可能性もあるので、手を合わせました。

Originally, "mizuko" is read as "suiji" and refers to a newborn baby. When a baby is born, its body and soul have not yet been established as "human beings", and it is an unstable existence, so it seems that the word "water" that flows is called "mizuko". However, from some time ago, it seems that the term "mizuko" has come to be used to refer not to the baby who gave birth to Mizuko, but to the foetation that died due to miscarriage or abortion. Although there were many "mizuko" who had flowed away, including the Edo period, there was no custom to worry about the whereabouts of their souls. This is because it was thought that the human soul would only live seven days after it was born. However, it seems that the idea that Mizuko also has a soul has spread since the 1970s. It is said that there is no Mizuko Jizo in the old Jizo, and it became clear that the baby in the womb did not grow well due to external factors such as echo examination of the fetal, atomic bomb and pollution, especially during and after the war. It's probably the most recent thing in history. Jizo, who has little connection with me, may be indebted to me in the future, so I joined hands.
