★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 織田信長・豊臣秀吉・徳川家康の三英傑に仕えた（日海（一世本因坊算砂）を開祖とする家系。
「本因坊」の名は、算砂が住職を務めた寂光寺の塔頭の一つに由来する。
「本因坊」はもとは連声して「ほんにんぼう」と読んだが、
囲碁の普及に伴って「ほんいんぼう」と読まれるようになった。
以降5人の名人を含め多くの名棋士を輩出し、
江戸期を通じて囲碁四家元、
将棋方三家の中で絶えず筆頭の地位にあった。
道策・丈和・秀和・秀策・秀栄などは、中でも高名である。
明治以後にもその権威は受け継がれるが、
昭和13年二十一世本因坊秀哉が引退した際、
その名跡を日本棋院に譲渡し、
家元制から実力制に移行することとなった。
昭和16年第一期本因坊戦が開催され現在まで続いている。
本因坊家の外家としては、
水谷家（水谷琢元、水谷琢順、跡目琢廉、跡目順策、四谷）がある。

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 仕事で近くに来たのでせっかくなので立ち寄りました。皆さんが書いてらっしゃる通り立看板があるだけです。ただ、まわりには吉良邸跡や勝海舟生誕地などがあるので史跡めぐりが好きな人は立ち寄ると良いでしょう。信号のない小さな十字路が多いのでスマホ片手の場合は通行にご注意ください。
