Fabulous exhibition in a beautiful museum complemented by a lovely village with gorgeous arts, sake brewery and great soba noodle restaurant nearby. Wonderful daytrip from Nozawaonsen.

Now I got to know the famous painter for the great wave! Small museum that provides great information on Hokusai. Sit down at the interactive media to see his other paintings/prints that was not exhibited.

Enjoyed the amazing works of one of the Japanese best artists, Katsushika Hokusai, and can learn the special relationship between Hokusai and Obuse ?

ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai is best know for "The Great Wave off Kanagawa", 32 views of Mt Fuji and 100 views of Mt Fuji. Well worth visiting this museum and sitting through the documentary on Hokusai. He lived locally from age 72 to 90.

Hokusai is one of my favorite artists. When we visited Obuse and found out there is a Hokusai museum, I had to go. Unfortunately, they were getting ready for a special event in a few days, so half the museum was not open. Admission was 50% off, but I would have looked to see the rest. What I saw was well worth the ¥500 admission. If you like Hokusai, be sure to visit. Nice museum shop for souvenirs.

Worth a visit if you’re in the Obuse area but probably not worth the trip by itself. I’m an admirer of ukiyo-e in general so might have more interest than most but I feel like my expectations weren’t really met. I mistakenly believed there’d be a good selection of some larger prints on display, but at the time of my visit the main event was an exhibition of postcard/book sized prints. A highlight of the museum would be the two impressive festival floats that they have on display. Be forewarned that it’s a rather expensive, somewhat abridged museum. Entrance for adults sits at ¥1,000 for a museum you can easily get around within 30 minutes or so. Parking outside is an additional ¥400 for small cars. All that being said, if you like ukiyo-e in general, or Hokusai in particular, it’s worth a visit.

What a gem of a find. I had no idea this was here, so stumbled across it. I was so engaged with the artwork. I had seen his paintings in London, but had no idea this place was the source of his inspiration. An exhibition well worth seeing, it's a spacious building, lots of artwork to view, so go with the intention to take your time. I had popped into the Tokai Kozen Memorial Museum which has a strong link to the artist, so also check that museum out. I was fortunate with the sunny weather that allowed me to wander around the area at my own pace. Fabulous a must see.
