The Former Chikurin-in is famous for its tow traditional tea-ceremony houses and aebor which has been
designated as a cultural asset of Otsu City.
The garden is composed of a river stream, stones, trees, and moss which collectvely reperesents Mother Nature.
The gaden's scenery and character changes from season to season.

One of the several attractions in this ancient town of Sakamoto. Used to be a Buddhist monk's inn but now nationally registered garden open to the public.

Former Chikurin-in is one of the many historical remains of Sakamoto, Otsu City. Earlier it was a satobo or home for monks, In the beginning of Meiji-era, Chikurin-in was sold to ordinary people and used as private villa, now a calm and peaceful sight seeing place. In the past, masters of all tea schools would gather here in order to enjoy tea together. There are two tea ceremony houses and an arbor designated as the cultural assets of Otsu City, where visitors can partake of matcha. The garden area of about 3,300 sq. meter makes it a beautiful natural atmosphere. The water of Omiya river streaming through fresh green trees and attractive moss produces a wonderful environment.

The place is relatively small. However, it has a lot to show as Japanese garden. There are many details waiting for discovery. It was not as crowded as other attractions. One can really enjoy the scene with a cup of matcha. Sitting in the porch and drink hot matcha was a very good cultural experience. It worth 4 dollar price for the matcha.

Highly photogenic former priest residence and garden. Costs 330 yen to enter and they seem to also have Kimono and Samurai costumes for hire as well. Quite a relaxing place to just sit and listen to the water.
