We walked in the first night and asked for a reservation the next day. He didn't hesitate and asked what price of course we would like and what time we were planning to arrive, as well as any dietary restrictions. The next day we learned it was a Japanese national holiday, and we are fairly certain he opened just for us. The food was spectacular! If my friend or I are ever in Kyoto again we will definitely drop in and ask for a reservation again. Fair warning, there was a language barrier, he spoke very little English and we spoke very little Japanese, but between his translation device and our Google translate apps were we able to understand the dishes and have a pleasant conversation. I only mention this because of other previous negative reviews. Do not let the language barrier keep you away from an amazing experience.

Loved the small setup as it was effectively private dining without the price tag. Takao also catered for allergies. Highly recommend this off the beaten track dining experience.
