すぐ近くには、居城であった茶臼山城址もあります。
八幡太郎源義家の嫡男であった義国は、気性が荒く争闘を好み、都で数々の事件を引き起こしていました。
家臣もまた主君に習い、些細なことから藤原実能の屋敷に押しかけ、焼き払ってしまったため、義国は責任を問われ、下野国足利郡へ追われることになりました。
足利で義国の嫡男として生まれたのが義重です。
長じて義重は新田庄へ移り、新田氏を名乗りました。
弟の善康は足利に残り、足利氏の祖となります。
南北朝時代になって、新田と足利は手を携えて鎌倉幕府を滅ぼしますが、どちらが主導権を持つかで激しく争うことになります。
その淵源は、どちらも自分こそが義国の血を継ぐ嫡流であるとの誇りがあったからだと思います(^_^ゞ
