That aside, there's a shopping area selling specialty food from niigata area. There are quite a selection and they also sell many kinds of Niigata rice.
There are also some restaurants and cafe.

It has amazing shopping and food choices and Ponshukan where you can taste over a hundred different local sake for 100 yen a taste! Make sure you schedule some time at the station before your train to experience the full range of fun stuff!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Strawberry farm in Echigo Yuzawa. 1,3 km from Yuzawa station. Open in winter. 150¥ entrance fee, 270¥/ 100 gram. Fresh strawberry but you should come as soon as possible before all strawberries were picked.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A convenient location to the ski resort in the local area. By far one of the least busiest Shinkansen station that I have ever been to. The entire station is clean including the restrooms and the ticket counter personnel are very helpful and speak great English. All of the signs are very easy to read and different car types are very well displayed.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Gateway to ski and hot spring resort. Just only 90 minutes from Tokyo station. There are amusement in the station such as hot spring, sake tasting, souvenir shops and restaurants.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Best places to go see snow if you want to go by Shinkansen. The only snow resort next to a shinkansen station. Only 2 hours from Tokyo and very easy to reach to. Also Genbi Shinkansen starts from here to Niigata which is an amazing art-sy kind of Shinkansen so it is fast but every compartment is designed by a different designer so it makes the ride fun as well. Highly recommended to go there.
If you don't want to ski and just see snow conveniently from Tokyo, this is easy and faster way to reach. Also the station has souvenir shops and snow gear for rental of you do plan to go skiing. Lockers are available to keep your stuff if you want to just go out for fun.
Food is also extensively available. Great place.
