This temple is my reason Miyajima is worth visiting.Could be a UNESCO world heritage site by itself. Easily the most serene of the buildings on Miyajima it is also one of the least crowded and most photogenic places on the entire island. Lanterns, statue after statue and an entire room filled with lanterns on the ceiling make this temple an easy 5 out of 5. Loved it.

Absolutely amazing! You can make this a day trip or even stay a few nights to experience the beauties of this mountainous island. The shrine itself has so much history and character, you’ll never want to leave.

Definitely the most interesting temple I've come across in Japan so far. Little shrines and temples are scattered and hidden in the jungle all connected by small walkways. The temple priests sure have a sense of humor. Little Buddha statues are lined up throughout the area. All with different poses and faces wearing cute little knit hats ?

Very interesting temple and worth to visit. There are many steps after the entrance. Many statues and lots of Japanese god. The visitors can spend at least an hour to discover all. Some point the visitors can scan QR code to download some explanation.

Very beautiful island and the very beautiful temple. Located next to a waterfall with rooms in caves it gave us great impression and a lot of great photos. Rainy day made the whole experience brighter and less tourists was the great advantage. Definitely recommend to visit.

One of the best buddhist temple I’ve visited in Japan! The many statues of buddhas present a very nice atmosphere and peace in the top temple is unlike any other place in Japan!

Too many people give this a miss, as it's a little off the main track and involves (easy) hill climbing. Don't, it's no problem to find with the simplest of tourist maps, and when you get there, there are a number of temples and shrines nestling amongst colourful pine trees and foliage. Some of the interiors are totally unique.

On Miyajima Island, we went for the Candle Light Festival, the event was free the day we went. The architecture is amazing to view. With some luck we got amazing pictures, the music was lovely, the people were warm and friendly. We hiked up and went the long way to get there but quicker (and easier) ways are available. All of the candles made for beautiful scenery. From a little research: Mantoue is a Buddhist service in which people repent for their sins and show gratitude for the blessings that all things receive in this world by offering “sacred light.” It’s said that through the act of offering sacred light to Buddha, one dispels darkness and invites knowledge and fortune into their life. This service began when the founder of Daishoin Temple, Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi, performed it at Mount Koya in 823. The practice is performed at several famous temples in Kyoto and Nara, but it is rare to see such an event held at more regional temples.
