It is a Zen temple of the Soto sect with a history of more than 600 years at the Ozeki family's Danna temple, the lord of the Kurobane domain who once ruled the area around Otawara city. All seven buildings on the premises are thatched, and the main hall of the temple, the meditation hall, and the Kuri corridor are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. You can enjoy various flowers and landscapes throughout the four seasons, such as peony, butterflies, hydrangeas, and autumn leaves. At Daio-ji Temple, anyone of any nationality or religion can experience zazen and sutra copying. Even beginners will be able to participate with peace of mind as they will explain the method well. In the main hall, there is a hanging scroll "Makuragaeshi Ghost" that depicts an old woman with no legs, with eyes that look like she is glaring from any angle. This is a rare work from the Edo period (1603-1868). There is a mysterious and scary story that if you sleep in front of this hanging scroll, the pillow will be returned the next morning and you will be turned in the opposite direction. Visiting the precincts is free, but it costs 500 yen to enter the main hall. I think it's best to go from the parking lot next to the elementary school. I couldn't go from Basho Park.

Really nice temple, with a beautiful traditional thatched roof. Very quiet, and very few crowds. Nice goshuin also available.
Really nice temple, with a beautiful traditional thatched roof. Very quiet, and very few crowds. Nice goshuin also available. A beautiful temple with a grass roof. It's quiet because it's not crowded. There is a nice red stamp.

Rakan statue in a unique pose and thatched temple Rakan statues are lined up on the left side of the stairs that climb between the cedar forests. You can enjoy it visually with only moving poses, but I'm curious about the meaning of the poses ^ ^ The rare thatched-roof temple was built in Oei 11 (1404 AD) and is a national important cultural property. In the stagnation after the rain Time was slowly flowing Thank you ?

It was a quiet Zen temple with a thatched roof. The precincts are not so large, but it was a calm and very nice atmosphere. The stone Buddha statue in the middle of the stairs also has a very nice taste, and although it is calm, it makes me feel happy.

Arhats with various expressions are enshrined in the middle of the stairs entering the precincts from the parking lot ?️, and you can enjoy worshipers ??. There was a Suikinkutsu in the precincts, and it gave off a beautiful tone. It is a well-managed temple with a clear air environment ?.

It takes hundreds of years to climb the slopes on both sides of the thickened tree. Only the sound of calming down and the leaves swaying spreads. Oh, I immediately thought that I like this place. There are many other attractions such as the 16 Rakan statues, the hanging shafts of the ghosts on the back of the pillow, stroking the Buddha and touching the place you want to heal, and the bottles. Do the flowers bloom beautifully in the season? I wanted to come back in the cool summer.

This was the first temple I visited when I first came to Japan, and we did a group zazen experience here. It took 19 years for me to get back, but it hadn't changed a bit. It's a quiet place tucked in the forest above the town, and notable for all the roofs being thatched -- even that of the walkway that encloses the grounds. It's also known for its peonies in May and June. I hope to go back again sooner rather than later!
