★ ★ ★ ★ ★ この慰霊碑は、昭和十八年十月二六日、土浦駅構内に於て発生した列車三重衝突事故による犠牲者の霊を鎮めるために建立されたものである。この列車事故は国鉄史上まれにみる大惨事であった。※死者九六名、負傷者は百余名と記録されている。
事故発生の経緯は以下の通りである。すなわち、貨物二九四列車が同日午後六時四〇分に土浦駅に到着、直ちに入れ換え作業が開始されたが、同貨物列車は誤って上り本線に進入、立ち往生した。その直後、駅構内へ上り二五四貨物列車が侵入、二九四貨物列車と衝突した。このため両者は脱線、暴走、二五四貨物列車は桜川沿いの下り本線上に横転した。この時多数の乗客を乗せた二四一旅客列車はすでに駅構内に接近しつつあり、急停止する間もなく転覆していた貨物列車と激突した。旅客列車は脱線、転覆、一、二両目は大破、三両目は鉄橋から斜めに傾き、四両目は完全に水没した。
This memorial monument was erected to calm the spirits of the victims of the train triple collision accident that occurred at Tsuchiura Station on October 26, 1948. This train accident was a rare disaster in the history of JNR. * It is recorded that 96 people were killed and 100 were injured.
The history of the accident is as follows. That is, the freight 294 train arrived at Tsuchiura Station at 6:40 pm on the same day, and the replacement work was started immediately, but the freight train accidentally entered the uphill main line and was stuck. Immediately after that, the 254 freight train invaded the station and collided with the 294 freight train. As a result, both of them derailed, runaway, and the 2554 freight train tumbled down the main line along Sakuragawa. At this time, the 2411 passenger train carrying a large number of passengers was already approaching the inside of the station, and it collided with a freight train that had capsized immediately before it suddenly stopped. The passenger train derailed, capsized, wrecked the first and second cars, tilted the third car diagonally from the iron bridge, and completely submerged the fourth car.
