天保七（1836）年作成の『土浦御城内外之繪圖』でも，霞門前に方形空間が描かれ，当時から桝形であったことが分かる。
この外桝形虎口で立ち往生すると，東櫓から銃砲火を受ける作りになっている。また，手前の橋も現在も遮蔽物のない直線になっており，東櫓から攻撃を受けた場合，横に逸れる逃げ場がない。
