★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 「日本武尊」（「古事記」では「倭建命」）東征の帰路の112（景行天皇41）年に、里長「赤須彦」が杉の大樹の元に仮宮を設けて酒饌を饗したというが、その次第について「尊大いに悦ばれ この杉の樹蔭 清々しく弥栄えて丈高く 奇杉なりと愛で給ひぬ 以後 この杉を御蔭杉と称せし」と社宝「神代文字社伝記」に記述されると現地で案内されている。しかし、204（神功皇后4）年春に枯れて、翌年春に中枝の大虚に実生の杉を植継を行ったとされ、さらに856（斉衡3）年5月に枯れて、858（天安2）年春に再び植継を行って現在に至るという。３代目だが伝樹齢千百余年の格別にみごとな大樹だ。
