The lantern, which is the tallest wooden structure in Japan (about 27m and 27.58m), was completed in the first year of Man'en (1860), and is designated as an important tangible folk cultural property of the country.
The interior is off limits, but looking up nearby, it's a really tall building.

"High lantern"
One of the famous places of Kotohiragu Shrine. It's a very big lantern. I don't think there was a 27-meter building at that time.
(Excerpt from the explanation signboard) In 1865, it was dedicated by the people of Samukawa District, Kagawa Prefecture. Currently, it is designated as an important tangible folk cultural property of the country. With a height of 27 meters and a three-story interior, it is the tallest wooden lantern in Japan. It is said that the light emitted from it was designed to reach the ships off the coast of Marugame. At that time, it was used as an index for ships sailing in the Seto Inland Sea, and was also a target light for shippers to worship Kompira-san. Graffiti * of people from the Edo period still remains on the inner wall.
(* It is a pity that you cannot tour the inside.)

The reason why we visited there was the building was featured in a TV program we often watch. Since the building was really beautiful, we really wanted to check it out in real. The TV show said the building used to be a light house. Back then, with the light from this building, people who were on ships learned where they were in the sea.
The building height is 27 meters. According to the explanation sign, the construction plan was finalized in 1854 and the construction ended in 1860. This is the biggest Japanese style wooden lantern in Japan.Behind the building, there was a playground. Actually, the lantern was taller than I expected, so I was totally overwhelmed by it.
However, the structure was very stylish and I was impressed by its beauty.
This building was featured on a TV program (Labyrinth Gourmet) that I often watch, and it was so beautiful that I really wanted to see it (laughs).
It was once used as a lighthouse, and at that time, the light from this building was used to determine where the people on board the ship were in the sea.

It is the tallest lantern in Japan and is 27m high. Completed in 1860. It is designated as an important tangible folk cultural property of the country.
It seems that it was built as a landmark for those who sail the Seto Inland Sea.
When I first saw it, I felt like this wasn't a shrine, and when I wondered what it was, I realized that it was the tallest lantern in Japan. At first I didn't know it was a lantern at all. It was located on the grounds of a small park, and children were playing around.
It's next to Kotoden-Kotohira station, so you can see it from the station, and you can see it as soon as you get off the station. It is also a short walk from JR Kotohira Station. I feel that access is very good.
I think it's good to see it while visiting Kompira-gu. It's a minor in Kagawa prefecture, but I think it's a wonderful tourist attraction.
