Outdoor Onsen in Zao-Onsen. One of the lowest PH onsens in Japan. The way to the Onsen is either by foot (15-20 minutes walk up hill) or by a private car, there is a free parking lot next to the Onsen. The walk there was quite tiring since it's up hill but relaxing at the Onsen afterwards was a good experience. The Onsen itself is an outdoor Onsen, two big bathes with different temperature and both with lots of sulfur. Entering the Onsen costs 550 yen and inside there are automatic lockers for 100 yen. Overall a great experience. I will absolutely come back here if I'm ever in the area again.

Yes, go early to beat the crowd, but honestly I can't see what the fuss is about. ¥550 and ¥300 for kids is pricey for a man-made cement pond. No showers or other add-ons. There's a locker for your stuff. You can bathe in the same famous water in town for ¥100. Still, it is outdoor and it's famous!

Nice outdoor onsen, esp during autumn when it’s cold with nice forest colours. However, male bathers beware as they will be stark naked and clearly visible to anyone entering the onsen from the car park.

This is one of the top onsen in Japan for me. The water is a light blue and is absolutely amazing for the skin. The natural river and forest make it so picturesque. We went in Sept. and it wasn't too crowded around 3 pm. Highly recommended. You can buy a towel there if you need, but you can also bring your own. Last, I was surprised there were no showering facilities here, but you should just rinse off really well will the onsen water in a small tub. Anyways, please go here!

This was an amazing tattoo friendly onsen. As long as you plan ahead and bring your own towel and look at when busy times are you'll be just fine. It was very easy to get to from Yamagata station via bus, and about a 20 minute walk (uphill). The facilities are simple yet functional. Most importantly the water is an amazing temperature, with a few different soaking options. Plan to spend 30 minutes soaking at least. After you get out relax in the waiting area and grab a cold beer. Completely worth the money.

Lovely! It was great to be out in nature. There are no showers so make sure you rinse off with onsen water from the tub first.

Picture is of the entrance, no cameras are allowed in the onsen. Very rustic and traditional, yet comfortable and satisfying onsen nestled in a corner of Zao Onsen Town. Natural hot water flows down from the mountain, with a strong hint of sulfur and other minerals. Definitely good for the skin and body. Entrance fee was 700yen, with towels costing I think 300yen extra and lockers 100yen. Try to bring your own towels! I visited around 5.30pm and stayed till 6.30pm, they were still open. The air was cool as it just rained, and the warm-but-not-too-hot onsen waters provided a comfortable contrast to the cool crisp air. It was a truly relaxing experience as I breathed in the fresh mountain air while watching water rush through the onsen and down a small stream, while being immersed in the hotel water myself. Definitely recommended for daytrippers. Easily among my top 5 onsen experiences.

Easily one of the most amazing onsens I have been to. It’s tattoo-friendly! Open air in the gorgeous mountain under a canopy of trees with a natural spring stream off to the side. It’s basically paradise. They channel the stream into the baths. The sulphur scent isn’t too strong either which can sometimes be a turn off. It’s also really cheap. Don’t hesitate. Will cherish this memory! Just perfect.
