★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 古代の水銀の産地。古事記には神武天皇にまつわるエピソードとして、次の内容が記される。
《宇陀を統治していたエウカシ（エ＝兄、ウカシ＝宇迦斯＝宇賀志）が、イワレヒコ＝神武天皇を暗殺しようとして大殿に罠を仕掛けるが、オトウカシ（オト＝弟）がそれを知りイワレヒコに密告した結果、エウカシは己の仕掛けた罠にかかって死ぬ。その死体を斬るとしたたり落ちた血が踝まで浸かるほどになり止まらなかったので、その土地を「宇陀の血原」と呼んだ。》
宇陀には水銀鉱山が散在する。隣接する谷は丹生谷と呼ばれ、丹生とは赤すなわち水銀のことであり、今でも露頭している岩に水銀含有の特徴である赤色を見ることができる。おそらく古代に取り尽くされるまで、血原と呼ばれたこのあたりは水銀含有岩が広がっていて真っ赤に染まっていたので血原と呼ばれたと推定される。

The land was called "Uda's Bloodfield" because the corpse was slashed and the blood that had fallen soaked into the ankles and did not stop. 》
Mercury mines are scattered in Uda. The adjacent valley is called Niu Valley, which is red, that is, mercury, and the red color, which is a characteristic of mercury content, can still be seen in the exposed rocks. Perhaps until it was exhausted in ancient times, it is presumed that this area, which was called Chihara, was called Chihara because mercury-containing rocks spread and were dyed bright red.
