甕(みか)森神社の由来については、古代の甕(カメ)は神霊の籠る聖なる容器とされ、大和民族による東征の最前線であった古代に於ける常陸国は「結界」のような場所でもあり、此処に甕を境界として埋めて祀ることで異民族(蝦夷)の侵入を防ぐ目的があったのではないか、と言われています。
